This is the Jardine Juniper, 3,200 years old and still very much alive. Clinging to a rocky ledge in the Cache National Forest, above my home town of Logan, Utah.

Your picture brings back memories of time spent among the Bristlecones of the White Mountains in California. They were twisted, too, like your Jardine Juniper. Their corkscrewed trunks were art in motion. There was no wind the day I was there but I could, just by looking and touching, feel something of the elements they face every day and have done for 4,000 plus years. Their blueish sap perfumes the air like incense, and those of us who visit tread quietly as we would in a cathedral.

Thanks, Winnie, for the memory.

Vi
